Anglian Water
Suite of eLearning courses on Waste Water, Water Filtration and Water Clarification
The background
Anglian Water needed a solution for Field Engineers to replace their current classroom training. They hoped to:
- Increase the level of flexibility for employees’ learning
- Provide an interesting and stimulating learning environment
- Prepare learners to successfully complete the relevant City and Guilds or equivalent qualifications
The challenge
Our challenge was to create an eLearning solution to aid knowledge and understanding of the Water and Waste Water processes required to work safely and effectively in an operational role.
Anglian Water wanted an intranet-hosted eLearning solution which:
- Is easy to use and intuitive
- Provides stimulating interactive training
- Increases employee engagement, provides measurable learning outcomes and positive changes in behaviour
- Is modular and allows the user to easily navigate the material and to restore the completion status on return
- Includes interactive assessments
- Captures the number of times a user has completed a course and their scores
- Allows additional reference material to be easily added
Our solution
Our solution includes the following key features in the design of the courses:
- Engaging Flash animations, illustrating and demonstrating the many processes involved in water treatment
- Photographs, illustrations, animations and clickable diagrams
- Opportunities for learners to confirm their knowledge and understanding by completing self-check activities
- An ‘expert’ who provides additional background information
- Minimal on-screen text
- Audio narration
The Expert
‘The Expert’ is available to provide information not crucial to learning which pops up when he is clicked. This allows the learner to control the level of detail the learning provides.
System requirements
- Perform acceptably even when using low bandwidth connections
- Use Adobe Flash 10 browser plug-in
- Support access from Toughbooks (laptops used by field operatives), desktops and home PCs
- Exchange learner completion progress and assessment scores with the Anglian Water LMS

Measuring understanding
The Assessment measures the learners’ knowledge and understanding. 20 questions are selected randomly from a pool of 40. Learners can print a certificate if they pass. If they fail, they’ll find out which parts of the course they need to revisit.
