Virtual Aviation College

Suites of eLearning courses for Middle East aviation clients

The challenge

To collaborate in developing eLearning for the aviation industry on a wide variety of subjects for Virtual Aviation College’s (VAC’s) Middle Eastern clients.

VAC was established in 2000 to provide elearning solutions for the aviation industry worldwide, in addition to traditional training methods.
The company also provides management consultancy services to airlines, airports, service providers and Civil Aviation Authorities on business and marketing strategy. TNA has worked closely with VAC since 2005, jointly developing eLearning courses which include:

  • Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) awareness eLearning for an aviation training centre
  • Occupational Health & Safety eLearning for a Middle East airport
  • Safety Management Systems (SMS) eLearning for a Head of State flight operation

Our solution

From whole organisation courses covering Occupational Health and Safety and Dangerous Goods Regulations Awareness, to occupation-specific courses, the TNA/VAC partnership has created engaging solutions for learners at all levels in essential aviation subjects.

The courses use location photographs, diagrams & illustrations, animations, video and interactive exercises to deliver engaging and memorable learning. The course Libraries and Glossaries may be easily updated by the client, without programming.

Here’s a little more about some of them…

Dangerous Goods Regulations Awareness
Dangerous Goods Regulations Awareness
International regulations controlling the packaging, labeling, handling and carriage of Dangerous Goods apply to every leg of a consignment’s journey. Inevitably, the DGR documentation is a vast tome, detailing every aspect of the legislation, and whose rules the shippers, handlers and loaders must be familiar with.

Our comprehensive DGR eLearning course introduces the background to the regulations and explains why they are necessary. It then moves on to cover specific topics such as forbidden items, classification, labeling and marking, storage and loading, and emergency procedures, helping the learner to understand why each regulation is necessary and how best to ensure that they have been followed.

Occupational Health & Safety
Occupational Health & Safety
This course was aimed at all staff in the organization and included topics on: identifying health risks, lifting & carrying, first aid & hygiene, causes & symptoms of workplace stress, hazardous substances and fire safety. The aim was to equip staff with a practical understanding of H&S risks and sufficient confidence to be able to respond to different situations.

As with all the courses produced for VAC photos, diagrams, videos, interactive exercises, case studies and self-check questions keep the material engaging.

An A-Z Glossary of Terms, a Library of printable reference documents and a useful links page help to reinforce the learning.

Safety Management Systems (SMS)
Safety Management Systems (SMS)
Aimed at management with responsibility for any aspect of airline and airport safety, this ICAO mandated course uses photos, diagrams, animations, video, interactive exercises.
The course:

  • Opens with a background to SMS systems, why they are needed and the bodies who regulate them
  • Analyses the causes of four major aviation incidents using timelines to trace the unfolding sequence of events
  • Describes the key components of safety management including hazard identification & analysis, risk assessment & tolerability, safety assurance & promotion
  • Details the company’s policies and procedures with respect to safety management

Measuring understanding

Typically, all the courses close with an Assessment which poses 20-30 questions from a larger pool to test the learner’s understanding of the procedures or subject matter. These comprise True/False, Multi-Choice, clickable images, hidden ‘hot spots’ and videos and are designed (for example) to assess their ability to recognise danger and to know what to do to minimise risk to themselves and to others.TNA exemplifies the best aspects of working with an owner-led and motivated company – Simon Walker, Managing Director – Virtual Aviation College

Who is it for?

A range of staff including pilots, cabin crew, baggage handlers, loaders, drivers and other operational, administrative and management employees across the clients’ organisations.

System requirements

Courses are SCORM 1.2 compliant and launched from VAC’s own LMS. This provides an audit trail with which VAC’s clients may monitor successful course completion across their workforces.
