National Grid Gas

Gas Operations Induction eLearning

The challenge

New starters at National Grid (Transmission) have traditionally worked through a comprehensive materials-based Induction programme, during their first 12 months. This has comprised an overview of the Gas Transmission area of National Grid, plus in-depth technical and commercial modules. On completion of a module, knowledge and understanding was assessed by their manager.

The company wanted a more flexible, online approach which would:

  • Enable materials to be easily and quickly updated with latest figures, statements, news, etc
  • Allow staff to fit learning more efficiently into their work schedule
  • Provide an instant, continuing source of reference for all staff
  • Ensure concepts and processes were understood more clearly using engaging (often animated) treatments
  • Measure knowledge retention and understanding via quizzes and record individual progress to an LMS

Our solution

A fresh new approach to induction training, offering exceptional flexibility, designed to engage and delivered online.

Our source material was a large set of PowerPoint presentations and supporting documents and we worked closely with National Grid subject experts to design an engaging, interactive course.

The suite of courses covers these modules:

  • Beach to Meter
  • Gas Knowledge
  • Physical Operation
  • Commercial
  • Legislation
Each module is launched independently from the National Grid LMS and includes process/sequence animations, interactive exercises and self-check questions, text explanations, illustrations and photographs all accompanied by professional audio narration.

Measuring understanding

Each module includes a final assessment test, posing 30 questions selected randomly from a pool of 60. In common with all assessments produced by TNA, the sequence of answers offered within each question is also randomized.

If the employee reaches the pass mark, they may print a personalised certificate. If not, they are shown a list of those topics which they should review before re-taking the assessment.

Who is it for?

New staff joining National Grid Gas Transmission, and all existing staff seeking a refresher training or reference material on specific topics.

System requirements

Accessed via the employee’s Flash-enabled web browser on the National Grid intranet. Launched from ‘WBTManager’ LMS.
